We are already looking at 2022 with a slanted eye. After all, there are again many top titles on the schedule next year. We have therefore listed the best 2022 games to look forward to.
For this list of the best 2022 games to look forward to, we have specifically listed the games that will actually appear in 2022. At least, the games are officially scheduled to be released in 2022. Even if it’s only a vague 2022, the games are valid for this list, so let’s get started quickly.
10. Hogwarts Legacy
Release Date: 2022
We kick off with a game originally planned for 2021. The game was only delayed to 2022 early in 2021. With a complete extra year, Hogwarts Legacy finally seems to be stealing the show in 2022. At least, that’s the idea of Avalanche Software, the studio that is responsible for Disney Infinity, among other things.
The studio itself is also directly the biggest reason to worry a bit about the game. The studio has never proven itself with such a big title before. Hogwarts Legacy will be an action RPG in which you play as a fifth-year student at Hogwarts.
Release Date: Q1 / Q2 2022
From Hogwarts we move on to the mysterious world of Forspoken. The new game from Luminous Productions, the studio behind Final Fantasy XV, looks very nice and is only planned for the PlayStation 5 and PC. That is immediately one of the reasons why we are looking forward to the game: the game is actually next-gen.
In the game (written by Rogue One writer Gary Whitta) you play as Frey Holland, a woman who is transported from New York City to the fantasy world of Athia. There she must survive in a world full of magical powers. That all sounds a bit vague, but with talents like Amy Henning (mastermind behind the first three Uncharted games) and Bear McCreary (composer of God of War’s reboot) it seems that this game will be fine!
8. Pokémon Legends Arceus
Release Date: January 28, 2022
For Pokémon Legends Arceus, we’re not sure if we should be ecstatic or nervous. It’s the first time in the history of the Pokémon series that Game Freak actually takes a new direction with the main series, a direction that looks suspiciously like Monster Hunter. Beauty flaws certainly seem to be in the cards and the game doesn’t look wonderful either.
- Pre-order Pokémon Legends Arceus at Dota 2 Boost
However, Pokémon fans (young and old) are enthusiastic that the call for innovation is finally being heeded. A much more open-world seems to be on the way, while also bringing many new Pokémon and a new form of the story. The series also goes back in time, which also brings with it a lot of new possibilities.
7. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Release date: March 25, 2022
More Borderlands already proved to be a recipe for success in 2019, but new Borderlands through the magnifying glass of Tiny Tina actually creates a lot more enthusiasm. Assault on Dragon’s Keep is the Borderlands 2 DLC that is highly valued by many. A complete game in the crazy game world called Tiny Tina’s brain seems like a fantastic idea.
- Pre-order Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands here at Nedgame
The gameplay itself does not seem to entail any drastic changes. This seems to have been expanded a bit further with some new possibilities, such as the addition of magical powers. The fact that Andy Samberg and Will Arnett have been called upon for the cast this time is also no punishment, making this quickly one of the best 2022 games we are looking forward to.
6. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Release Date: 2022
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an odd one out on this list of the best 2022 games to look forward to. It is the title where there is still a lot of doubt about the success rate. This is because developer Rocksteady no longer only offers a great single player experience. At least, the game can be played with friends via 4-player co-op.
In the game, this time you don’t play as well-known DC heroes, but your goal is to kill them. The Justice League has been brainwashed thanks to Brainiac, so it’s up to the Suicide Squad to stop the evil Superman, Flash and the rest of the Justice League. Unlike the Batman Arkham games, this time you only do that in a color-drenched Metropolis, which provides some welcome change from the gray and drab Gotham.
5. Horizon Forbidden West
Release Date: February 18, 2022
There is virtually no doubt among fans about Horizon Forbidden West on the other hand. The new game from the Dutch Guerilla Games seems to be a blast for PlayStation fans and is scheduled for early 2022. In the game, Aloy travels to brand new areas to fight a mysterious threat.
- Pre-order Horizon Forbidden West here at Media Markt
This will manifest itself in new gameplay options, among other things. The Dutch studio has made some adjustments to make the fights a lot smoother. The studio has learned from the original and many are curious whether the second part in the open-world series has actually worked out all the feedback from the original for a new gem.
4. Elden Ring
Release Date: February 25, 2022
2022 is also the year in which From Software returns with yet another new title. Nearly three years after the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, it’s now time for Elden Ring, an ambitious new direction for From Software. This time, a rock-solid open-world game is being made that was developed together with Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin.
- Pre-order Elden Ring on Mmr Boost
That’s why you can expect in-depth lore on top of combat that will be nice and spicy again. What’s especially sparking enthusiasm is the fact that From Software seems to be serving up bigger and more diverse territories with Elden Ring. Add to that the fact that legendary creator Hidetaka Miyazaki calls the game a natural evolution of his earlier Dark Souls series and you have all the ingredients for a potential Game of the Year.
Release date: November 11, 2022
The bronze in this list of the best 2022 games to look forward to goes to Starfield. The new game from Bethesda Game Studios is the first major single player game from the famous studio since Fallout 4. That naturally brings high expectations.
This time, a completely new IP is chosen. Starfield will be an open-world RPG set in space that in some ways resembles Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. You can play this new adventure in first or third-person, you can customize your character to your heart’s content and the story revolves around multiple factions that now live side by side in peace after a bloody war, although that is not always easy.
What creates extra enthusiasm among players is that Starfield is only being developed for next-gen. The game will not come to the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. The PS5 will not be discussed either, because Bethesda (now part of Microsoft) makes the game exclusively for Xbox Series X and PC. The game should really show what the next-gen Xbox can do.

2. God of War Ragnarok
Release Date: 2022
Across the river, God of War Ragnarok should do the same for the PlayStation 5. At least that’s what fans initially hoped when the game was announced at the PS5 Showcase. It was later revealed only that the sequel to the beloved reboot of God of War would also be coming to the PlayStation 4.
Presumably, we shouldn’t expect drastic changes in game design that would only be possible on PS5. However, fans are looking forward to a game that looks even better and plays even better than God of War (2018). The sequel is set after the 2018 title and also promises to conclude the exciting story of Kratos and Atreus.
Expectations are therefore immediately high, because the story has turned out to be one of the coolest aspects of God of War’s reboot so far. Especially because the balance between a personal story and spectacle was well maintained. As a result, the game has rightfully claimed the silver medal in this list of the best 2022 games.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
Release Date: 2022
Of course there can only be one game on the throne when it comes to the best 2022 games to look forward to and that is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. The original is considered by many to be a masterpiece and soon was there is a call for a sequel. That will actually happen and the first real look at the game in 2021 did a lot for fans.
Nintendo seems to want to expand the world further and present new possibilities. Add to that more depth in the story and the foundation for the sequel seems to be laid. There is still some tension about how much innovation the game can actually bring.
After all, with Breath of the Wild, the series took a new direction by opting for an open-world. You can’t just repeat such a trick. Hopefully Nintendo will once again surprise fans in a way they don’t see coming. Now we just have to wait and see if the game actually appears in 2022.
